Step by Step Directions to make a Spooky Fun Table Runner
My Halloween table runner quilt is a pieced layer of cotton Halloween fabrics with a sheer shimmery purple and black spiderweb overlay and a ribbon embellishment across the top. The backing is a single piece of the black and orange gingham from the pieced squares. To finish off, I used a plain black binding. This quilt is a simple design that I worked out as I went on. I'm very happy with how it ended up! |
 Here's my fabrics I started with. Hmmm -- what can I do with these? I cut them into 2 inch strips. |
 Then I stitched pairs of strips together. |
 I iron my quilting alot. I iron them as stitched and then opened. |
 Then, I cut the strips into 2 inch pieces. |
I arranged them into rows, trying to make it random and avoid repeating fabrics next to each other. |
 I stitched pairs of pieces into squares. I was working on two rows at once this way. In my mind's eye, I saw a square of four cut pieces as one unit and worked toward that. You can stitch your rows together in any manner that makes sense to you. |
 Next, the blocks are stitched into rows. |
 With a few rows stitched, it's beginning to look like a quilt! |
 Make as many rows as you'd like, to fit the table you choose. Mine ended up about 24 inches long by 17 inches wide. |
 Hmmm. Needs something - maybe orange polka-dot and white ghost ribbon? |
 But I also bought three purple Halloween ribbons, in the mistaken belief that I had purple in my fabrics... |
 I DO have purple Halloween fabric leftover from costume-making! |
 I think it works! Here's my quilt sandwich with all the layers. |
 Which ribbon to use? All three? Choices, choices... |
 Oh, that's nice... |
 Using my quilt ruler to line up the center of the ribbons. Usually the orange markings show up great on my fabrics! |
 This pretty ribbon is half sheer, half solid. I stitched it to the quilt down the center, letting the ribbon edges add dimension. |
 Almost done! A simple black binding sets it off nicely. |
 Voila, a spooky Halloween embellished table runner! |
